Wolverine’s Redesign Was Inevitable
As Logan Reclaims His Humanity from Colossus' Regime, He Needs to Make a Statement
Wolverine’s new look removes his mask, revealing a wild, bushy beard underneath. He also appears to have daubed a white ‘X’ symbol over the star-like red symbol he’s been wearing as the Ultimate Universe’s ‘Winter Soldier.‘Logan is also shown rocking a sword as he goes up against traditional enemy Omega Red - likely the Ultimate Universe’sversion of the Muramasa Blade, which cuts on the molecular level. This allows the blade to cut through Adamantium and deal lasting injuries to those with healing factors. How Wolverine got this weapon in the Ultimate Universe is unknown at this point.
So far inUltimate Wolverine, Logan has been the weapon of the Eurasian Republic - a territory within the worldwide regime of the Maker. The Republic is run by Arkady Rossovich’s Omega Red, as well as corrupted versions of Colossus (Piotr Rasputin) and his sister Magik (Illyana Rasputin), who oversee Directorate X as a secret government department. As their enforcer,Wolverine has killed several of his old friendsfrom the resistance, but now he’s finally being brought back to his old self by the remaining heroes.
It’s entirely fitting that as Wolverine frees himself from Directorate X’s control, he sheds the dehumanizing muzzle they made him wear and subverts their symbol of control into a declaration of mutant identity. While fans might be a little sad to see the unique masked design fall by the wayside, it’s a necessary part of the story as Logan reclaims his humanity, and it’s good to see that Marvel is going for a more striking redesign than just losing the mask. Having turnedWolverineinto a weapon, Colossus and his family are about to suffer the vengeance they’ve earned.
Ultimate Wolverine #9is coming September 10 from Marvel Comics, followed byUltimate Wolverine #10on October 1.
