Youis one of the most successful shows on Netflix, but season 5 appears to be getting much less praise from critics. Joe Goldberg is not a hero, but Penn Badgley, the actor behind Joe, is a spectacular talent. Over the course of five seasons, he has helped to craft and shape a character who has struck both thrilling excitement and nervous anxiety into the audience.
And while thefirst four seasons ofYouwere largely hits, with minor dips in quality throughout, thefifth and final season appears to be faring less wellthan previous entries. However, this is not uncommon for shows as they come to an end, and certainly with a show that has amassed such an adoring audience asYou, it’s hard to keep everyone satisfied. Regardless, the show has successfully run its course, and kept viewers engaged throughout.
How You Season 5’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Compares To The Previous Four Seasons
You Season 5 Is Lagging Behind For Critics & Audiences
Rotten Tomatoes tends to be a fairly reliable resource for seeing what critics and audiences think about a show. With the site collating scores from across the internet, it creates an overall score, which helps to inform viewers about what to expect in terms of overall quality. And while the majority of the series have scored in the high 80s or 90s,season 5 is off to a slightly rockier start with 81%. Now, that is a considerable rise of 10% from what the series had on its debut, when only early reviewers' scores were in, but it’s still a decrease from the rest of the show’s run.

Now, compared against the audience score, this is actually much more consistent. Despite a strong start in season 1, followed by an equally consistent season 2, season 3 saw the ratings take a dip for audiences. Likewise, season 4 had the biggest drop-off, until now, whenYouseason 5narrowly came in just below the season 4 score. Overall, this paints a picture of some fans getting tired of the show, and the quality dropping from the original concept that made it work in season 1.
What Reviews Have Said About You’s Final Season
The Consensus About You Season 5 Is Mixed
As for critics' reviews, the critics appear to be trailing behind the audience with more patience and grace for the series that others appear to have grown tired of. In general, the critics suggest that this fifth and final season was wise to end things here, rather than allow theconcept to continue and become stale. However, this evidently happens for many other viewers much sooner. For those critics who were actually more critical, the general issue appears to be a sense that the thrill and danger are absent.
Meanwhile, positive reviews highlight the fact thatYoutakes Joe back to his roots in New York City. It appears to have a mixed reception to some extent, but with an 81% score from critics overall, it’s considerably more favorable than it is negative. As far as the general audience goes, criticism is directed at the slow pace, the incoherent story, and the confused morality of the show in its conclusion.
You’s Overall Show Score On Rotten Tomatoes Is Still Impressive
As a whole,Youmanages to maintain a score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and 72% from audiences. Overall, this is incredibly impressive for a series with as many seasons asYouhas. It’s not an easy thing to maintain a score that is that high, and one that has as broad an audience asYouhas on Netflix. And it makes sense, considering thegravitas that Penn Badgley brought to the role, and the clever concept that put a serial stalker and murderer in the hot seat as the leading man. Joe is charming, intelligent, and deeply problematic.
As the show develops and Joe reveals more of himself, the audience becomes more conflicted about this character. Evidently, Joe is not a good person, and his reaction to situations is not an average one, but in his own twisted way, he makes sense. This ability to make a character who should be terribly unlikable into something with charm and humor is spectacular. Now, the later seasons may have struggled to maintain that persona, and Joe’s twisted sensibilities continued to become more precarious, butYoustill stands out as being a worthwhile watch.
