The creators of the beloved Apple TV+ comedy seriesPlatonicexplain why the initial plan to turn the show into an anthology series was scrapped.Platonicseason 1premiered on Jul 21, 2025, and was critically lauded, with the show currently holding a 93% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series, which looks at modern relationships from a humorous standpoint, starsSeth Rogen, who also worked on the acclaimed Apple TV+ comedyThe Studio, andRose Byrne, who will be seen in an upcoming A24 movie. The second season ofPlatonicpremieres on June 18, 2025.

While speaking withThe Hollywood Reporter,Stoller and Delbanco stated that they had the intention of telling a different story each season ifPlatonicwas renewed, but working with Rogen and Byrne changed all that. The producers decided that because they enjoyed working with the actors so much, it made more sense to continue their story with a second season. Stoller said:

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as Will and Sylvia at a shop in the Platonic finale

“They have such amazing chemistry together, and it was such a great experience, that we decided to ask them if they would be open to doing more, and they said yes. And Apple, rightly so, felt like they were the show’s identity. I remember they said, ‘Who is going to want to watch a season two without them?'”

What Does This Mean For Platonic Season 2?

How Much Will The Show Change?

During the interview with THR,Delbanco disclosed that the decision to extend the storyline for Rogen and Byrne’s characters impacted the first season’s ending. In the original idea for the season 1 finale, Rogen’s Will was supposed to reveal that his fiancé was pregnant. Because season 2 is a continuation of the first season, the creators felt that having Will stay with his fiancé in San Diego would not make sense for the story, but having him abandon his family wouldn’t help the character’s likability. Therefore, the original ending was changed so season 2 could work.

Since the creators wrote season 1 as closed-ended in many ways, it is interesting to ponder what will be in store when it comes toPlatonicseason 2.The creators said that they believe there are endless stories to tell between these two main characters, so it seems as though Delbanco and Stoller are delighted to havePlatonicnot be an anthology per season.

Our Take On Platonic Not Being An Anthology Show

It Could Be Good For The Series

While it may feel a bit rocky for a show that was conceived as an anthology to not follow that format, the audience seems to really connect with Will and Sylvia, played respectively by Rogen and Byrne. The audience has gotten to know the pair and taking them out of the equation completely in favor of new characters and a new storyline could hurt the show’s reception and ratings.

Season 2

August 08, 2025

Overall,it seems like a positive thing forPlatonicto be a series rather than an anthologybecause the first season worked so well. When something contains a formula that works, it may be for the best not to mess with what makes it successful.
