Wednesdayco-creator and showrunner Miles Millar has discussed one key new Addams Family character’s changes. The entire eight-episode first season ofWednesdaydropped on Netflix on June 23, 2025, and drew critical acclaim for its complex storytelling, plotting, dark tone, offbeat humor, and central performance from Jenna Ortega, and won four Primetime Emmy Awards.
Now, almost three years later.Wednesdayseason 2, part 1 dropped on Netflix on August 6, and the trailer hints at some big changes for the show. The story picks up after Wednesday’s first year at Nevermore Academy, and the addition of a new character close to Wednesday helps expand the Addams Family backstory, and they’re decidedly different from other adaptations.
DuringScreenRant’s interview with Millar, and co-creator and showrunner Alfred Gough, the former discussed the addition of Grandmama, played by Joanna Lumley, and how the character differs from other iterations of the character. He noted her elegance and sophistication, praised Lumley, and stated that, of all the Addams Family characters, she differs the most. Check out Millar’s comments below:
For me, one of the most exciting castings was Joanna Lumley, who plays Grandmama. She was top of our list, and she just brings such impeccable energy and delight to that role, and we really mixed it up with the three generations of Addams women. There’s an evil glint in her eye whenever she’s onscreen, and Jenna and Joanna have amazing chemistry as well.
I think it really brought something different and unexpected to the role. I think of all iterations of Addams family characters, she’s the most different from what you’d expect. She has a sophistication and elegance that is very special and unique to this show and to this interpretation of the character of Grandmama.
What This Means For Wednesday Season 2
Bringing Grandmama into the show is an interesting way of creating more depth and friction within the family, as well as giving Wednesday someone to develop a maternal bond with. The season will explore secrets and feuds that run deep through the Addams Family, and could spill over into Wednesday’s personal life.
Millar’s excitement at introducing the character, and giving her a darker, more sophisticated, and more captivating edge is certainly an interesting development for the show. There is a good chance that Grandmama will continue to play a prominent role throughkeyWednesdayseason 2’s plot points, while also showing a different side to Wednesday as well.
