By now, the development troubles during the making ofDestinyhave become the stuff of gaming legend. While Jason Schreier detailed some of those issues during an earlier piece written for Kotaku, however, his latest announcement seems to indicate there is a lot more of that story left to tell. Schreier announced on hisTwitteryesterday that he would be releasing a book calledBlood, Sweat, and Pixels, and one of the stories it would cover would be ’s difficult development stages.
There has been a lot of speculation over the years about just how much ofDestiny’s development was neutered by deadlines and Bungie adjusting to a new partnership with Activision. Even at release, fans with a keen eye noted that a lot ofDestinycontent had been cut before launch, while many passionate Guardians will citeDestiny: The Taken Kingas the first truly “complete"Destinygame despite its status as an expansion.
Given the fact thatDestiny 2should be coming soon, Schreier’s new details regarding the development of the originalDestinywill arrive at a very interesting time in the series' history. The book’s official description states that it will follow “Bungie spinning out from their corporate overlords at Microsoft to createDestiny”, and it’s very likely the story will shed some light on just how chaotic that move was forDestiny’s developer.
If, as some expect, that turbulence was a major reason behindDestiny’s lackluster launch andsubsequent comeback withThe Taken King, then Schreier’s story might also generate higher expectations forDestiny 2. Bungie has had a lot of time to learn from the mistakes the developer made with the originalDestiny, and things have settled down considerably for the studio since the initial separation from Microsoft.Blood, Sweat, and Pixelsmight do double duty in explaining what went wrong (and, to be fair, what went right) duringDestiny’s development while also, very subtly, hinting thatDestiny 2could be the blockbuster its predecessor was supposed to be all along.
Destinyis available now for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360.Destiny 2is still expected to release in 2017.
