Even before the release ofJurassic World Rebirth, one key element was huge in its marketing: the dinosaurs. While these revived prehistoric creatures have always been essential to the fabric of theJurassicmovies, director Gareth Edwards and his team were very adamant about reemphasizing the creatures and the fear they cause.
In many ways,Rebirthwas successful in this effort. Some of the film’s most climactic moments involve them, including the D-Rex that threatens Duncan’s life at the end of the movie. The visual effects are good enough to keep the audience believing what was happening on screen, even with no reference point for real-life dinosaurs.
Two ofRebirth’s key dinosaursare the Mosasaurus and the Quetzalcoatlus. The former animal is an aquatic creature that comes in during the film’s first act. The Mosasaurus creates some of the best action in the movie, threatening to destroy Zora and her team’s research vessel.
The Quetzalcoatlus are flying beings that provide an interesting variation of the types of creatures portrayed inJurassic World Rebirth. They are also an impressive testament to the strength of the movie’s visual effects. Despite their intrigue, however, there is something off about both of these creatures.
The Mosasaurus & Quetzalcoatlus Aren’t Dinosaurs
They Have Different Biology
While theJurassicmovies are known for bringing dinosaurs back to life, the franchise is not very strict when it comes to species classification.Rebirthembodies this, as the Mosasaurus and Quetzalcoatlus are not actually dinosaurs.Rather, the Quetzalcoatlus is a pterosaur, and the Mosasaurus is the namesake of a group of marine reptiles called the Mosasuars.
Even if they overlapped with some of the geological periods, they are not technically dinosaurs. Because there are also real-life dinosaurs brought back to life forJurassic World Rebirth, it can be easy to lump the creatures in with the actual dinosaurs. This would, however, be inaccurate, as both creatures are in different biological classifications.
How Accurate Are The Mosasaurus & Quetzalcoatlus In Jurassic World Rebirth?
Their Sizes May Have Been Different
The biggest inaccuracy of Mosasaurus and Quetzalcoatlus inJurassic World Rebirthis the false implication that they are dinosaurs. However, some details are accurate in how each creature is portrayed.Mosasaurus, for example, was the primary predator in ocean environmentsduring the Prehistoric Age.
That said, the versions of the underwater creatures inJurassic World Rebirthare far bigger than what they would have looked like in real life, according to scientists. This seems to be a frequent flaw in how dinosaurs are portrayed inRebirth, often extending their beasts beyond their more realistic scales.
The scale of the Quetzalcoatlus seems to be more accurate. Scientists widely believe that it was the largest flying dinosaur-like creature to have ever lived, and may have been even bigger than what was portrayed inJurassic World Rebirth. So, even if they played fast and loose with what was a dinosaur, both creatures still have some science to back them.
