Torchlight 3has a number of different character classes; there’s the Sharpshooter and Railmaster classes, the Dusk Mage class, andthe sometimes confusing Forged class. It seems developers Echtra Games are not content with the existing class options, however, as the studio is adding a brand new pirate class to the RPG dungeon crawler in a future update.

For the uninitiated,Torchlight 3was released on July 22, 2025 following the success ofTorchlightandTorchlight 2. The third installment of the series expanded some of the multiplayer functionality of its predecessors, though dropped its initial plans of becoming a massively multiplayer online game. In the developer’s blog post from a few days ago, Echtra Games states that it expects the newest update, including the new pirate class, to come out in roughly a month and a half.

The pirate class has officially been deemed the Cursed Captain class, and whileTorchlight 3’s Sharpshooter classcan often have a pirate-esque look to it, the Cursed Captain class brings the aesthetics to a whole new level. As Echtra explains it, “As an experienced captain of the seas, this corporeal spectre can summon a ghostly crew of swashbucklers, and use the tools of the piracy trade to tackle combatants.” The class will also have its own unique resource, doubloons, which it will collect via battles.

The Cursed Captain class is expected to launch with an update that will also bring additional content as well as several bug fixes to the dungeon crawler.Torchlight 3has been releasing frequent updatessince its release, some bringing bundles of new content and some bringing nice little tweaks. From what is known currently, it appears the Cursed Captain update will encapsulate the best of both these worlds.

Torchlight 3is available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
