Fans of theJurassic Parkfranchise may have recently heard of UK-based studio Coatsink Software, which is currently working on the VR titleJurassic World: Aftermath. AfterJurassic World: Aftermathwas announced last month, it has been announced that Coatsink is being acquired by Thunderful Group in an effort to expand its games segment.
Thunderful, which is made up of Swedish developers Image & Form (theSteamWorldseries,The Gunk) and Zoink (Fe,Lost in Random), revealed in a press release that it will pay £23 million (around $29.7 million USD) upfront. Furthermore, there’s an earn-out component to the deal that will depend on Coatsink’s financial performance in the next fiscal year, which could potentially raise the sale price to a maximum of £65.5 million ($84.8 million). Thunderful added that Coatsink will remain independent and, “Be reported as part of Thunderful Games.”

Since it was founded in 2009, Coatsink has been involved in a wide number of projects, including high-profile VR games likeShadow Pointand theEsperseries. The press release notes that the studio has five projects in development, including games likeJurassic World: AftermathandTransformers Battlegrounds, in addition to “several work-for-hire and publishing projects” that will “strengthen Thunderful’s existing development pipeline in 2021 and 2022.”
As for why Coatsink was picked to help its games segment, Thunderful CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson said it has formed a good relationship with studio founders Tom Beardsmore and Paul Crabb, as well as other key personnel. Thunderful believes that the studio’s “strong work ethics and corporate culture will be a very valuable strong complement to Thunderful’s existing businesses,” through the release ofJurassic World: Aftermathand beyond.
