Almost a year after the series finale, the creators of the supernatural dramaEvilgive a candid response to the show’s cancellation. The ending of the popular Paramount+ original series leaves the door just open enough fora potentialEvilseason 5, with Kristen (Katja Herbers) and David (Mike Colter) beginning a new chapter in Rome. But despite acclaim and strong viewership, with its availability on Netflix, the show did not receive a last-minute renewal.
In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporterto reflect on their recent series, which includesHappy FaceandElsbeth, co-creators Robert and Michelle King reflected on the cancellation ofEvil. The creative partners and married duo admitthey still wonder about the decision to conclude the story and speculate on why there was no longer a need for the show. Check out their comments below:
Robert King: I don’t f***ing understand why Evil was canceled; I still can’t. I lay awake at night wondering why it was canceled, and it all seems to come back to the new streaming model, which is, “We have enough. We don’t need more. There’s no place for your show.”
What can you say except that it was stupid. And I think the business is stupid.
What The Cancellation Of Evil Means
It Was A Top 10 Show
By the timethe ending ofEvilwas announced, the supernatural horror was already notable for being a reliable presence on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 Charts. It was evenamong the ten most-streamed shows of 2024, which makes the decision not to move forward with a renewal all the more puzzling. Robert King echoes the confusion in his remarks, with some industry analysts explainingEvil’s end as part of the changes at Paramount and the Skydance acquisition.
The supernatural drama was, in any case, given extra episodes to bow out on its own terms. But considering the affection that fans have developed fortheEvilcast, which also includes Aasif Mandvi, Kurt Fuller, Marti Matulis, Brooklyn Shuck, Skylar Gray, Maddy Crocco, Dalya Knapp, Christine Lahti, and Michael Emerson in main roles, there was a hope that there could be another outing for the series. The series has also received considerable praise from high-profile figures in the entertainment industry, including from author Stephen King.
Our Take On Evil’s Cancellation
Keeping The Hope Alive
The Kings remain busy at Paramount, withElsbeth,Happy Face, and other projects all falling under the company’s umbrella.Elsbethwas renewed for season 3 and a potentialHappy Faceseason 2 may still happen. Given that the Kings' working relationship with Paramount is alive and well, there is always a chance of the prospect of picking up the story. The open-ended nature ofEvil, in any case, makes it more possible than it might be otherwise. It wouldn’t be too out of place to revisit David and Kristen in a few years, just to see what they’re up to.
