Star Trek: Strange New Worldsjust delivered the first-ever team-up of two iconic members of Kirk’s USS Enterprise crew. Written by Dana Horgan & Kathryn Lyn and directed by Jonathan Frakes,Star Trek: Strange New Worldsseason 3, episode 4, “A Space Adventure Hour” is a classic holodeck episode, complete with period costuming and technological mayhem.

Star Trek: Strange New Worldshas already given us iconic team-ups of legacyStar Trekcharacters. Lieutenant James Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) first worked together inStrange New Worldsseason 2, episode 6, “Lost in Translation”. That episode also saw Uhura introduce Kirk to Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck), kicking off one ofStar Trek’s best friendships.

Scotty and Uhura

In “A Space Adventure Hour”,the newly-installed holodeck is operating unexpectedly—as holodecks are wont to do. With Commander Pelia (Carol Kane) on shore leave, Lieutenant Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) has to keep the Starship Enterprise running. Scotty won’t let anyone see that he’s in over his head, but he might “hypothetically” need help.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Delivered Scotty & Uhura’s First Ever Team Up

Scotty & Uhura Solve The Enterprise’s First Holodeck Problem

Star Trek: Strange New Worldsdelivers Scotty and Uhura’s first-ever team-up, when Scotty needs to reach La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), who’s trapped on the holodeck. Naturally,Ensign Uhura is Scotty’s go-to for advice on the “hypothetical” comms question. But non-verbal communication is another language that Uhura speaks fluently, and Scotty isn’t being subtle about this being a very real, not-at-all hypothetical problem.

This younger Scotty is still uncertain about his place on the Enterprise, and a brief glimpse at his backstory, in conversation with Number One (Rebecca Romijn), reveals exactly why Scotty’s reluctant to ask for help.Scotty’s hyper-independence is a crutch, because he believes—in a roundabout way—that him relying on others is what got the Stardiver crew killed.

Uhura and Scotty - Star Trek V The Final Frontier

Martin Quinn’s Scotty first appeared inStar Trek: Strange New Worldsseason 2, episode 10, “Hegemony, Part I”.

It’s why Scotty frames his request to Uhura as a “hypothetical” instead of admitting he needs help. AndUhura is ready to take on any challenge, “hypothetical” or not. With Scotty’s engineering know-how and Uhura’s deep understanding of the Enterprise’s comm systems and holodeck AI, they figure out how to patch into the program to talk to La’an.

Uhura and Scotty’s first team-up showcases their individual brilliance, a healthy respect for one another’s skill sets, and how they can easily work together to come up with a solution.Uhura gets through Scotty’s social barriers, and proves she’s someone Scotty can trust implicitly—and that will carry over intoTOSand beyond.

Scotty & Uhura Never Got The Star Trek Romance The TOS Movies Promised

Could Uhura & Scotty Be Strange New Worlds' Next Retroactive Romance?

By the time of theStar TrekmovieswithThe Original Seriescast,Scotty (James Doohan) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) entertained a romance, openly flirting inStar Trek V: The Final FrontierandStar Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Neither movie actually delivered on the promise of a Scotty/Uhura romance, but that doesn’t mean itneverhappened.

Montgomery Scott and Nyota Uhura might be a pairing thatStar Trek: Strange New Worldsretroactively canonizes, like theTrekprequel already has for Spock and Nurse Chapel. “A Space Adventure Hour” also confirms Spock’s romance with La’an.Scotty and Uhura might get the romance the movies impliedbeforeStrange New Worldsends with season 5, then part as friends.

Because of Nyota flirting with Beto Ortegas (Mynor Luken), the younger brother of helm officer Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia),Strange New Worldsprobably has a different idea about Uhura’s love life.

So far, Uhura has been instrumental in connecting all theTOScharacters inStrange New Worlds, which solidifies her role in “Keep Us Connected” fromStrange New Worlds' musical episode. WithStar Trek: Strange New Worlds' team-up between Ensign Uhura and Lieutenant Scott, another piece of theStar Trek: The Original Seriespuzzle slots into place.
