The official Twitter account for Comedy Central’sSouth Parkset off speculation earlier this week that upcoming Ubisoft gameSouth Park:The Fractured But Wholemight see release onNintendo Switch. But now, a representative from the show has confirmed that a Switch version of the game is not in development.
On March 13, @SouthParktweeted a GIF of Cartman freezing himself with the caption, “Nin-ten-do. I’m coming. I’m coming, Nin-ten-do. #blizzard2017.” The quote is from Episode 12 of South Park’s 2006 season, the one where Cartman decides to intentionally freeze himself ahead of the Nintendo Wii’s release date so he doesn’t have to wait for it any longer. The tweet immediately sparked speculation onRedditandNeoGAFthatSouth Parkwas teasing a Switch announcement forSouth Park: The Fractured But Whole.But it was not to be, asSouth ParkStudios put out a statement via Comedy Central on Wednesday to shoot down the rumor.
“South Park: The Fractured But Wholewon’t be coming to [the Nintendo] Switch,” the representative told IGN. When asked for comment Ubisoft did not add any additional info to the matter.
Taking another look at the original tweet, the hashtag #blizzard2017 should have been seen as a strong hint that the account was not referencing the Switch. Much of the Northeast including New York City where Comedy Central is based has been hit by a late winter storm over the last few days. The tweet was likely referring to the current conditions outside at the time.
South Park: The Fractured But Wholewas originallyrevealed at E3 2015but has recently had some development troubles. Originally slated for a December 2016 release, it was firstpushed back to Q1 2017only to bedelayed againinto Ubisoft’s next fiscal year. The game is a sequel to 2014’s well-receivedSouth Park: The Stick of Truth.
South Park: The Fractured But Wholeis currently scheduled for release in the 2017-2018 fiscal year for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
