What Homeland Security’s South Park Image Says About Season 27
There’s been some tension between the parody show and the US government since the season 27 premiere. ThecontroversialSouth Parkepisodesees Donald Trump in a romantic relationship with Satan while forcing Jesus into schools across the United States. He also threatens to sue the titular town for trying to get answers, leading them to spoof pro-Trump commercials.
The White House made an official response to the episode, calling the series a “fourth-rate show” while praising Trump’s actions since taking office. However, it seems neither party is done taking shots at each other:South Parkseason 27, episode 2’s trailer promises more focus on Trump, with the image of ICE posted by Homeland Security coming from said trailer.
It’s unclear if ICE really will be featured in the next episode, where it seems Mr. Mackey would be reluctantly joining their operations. This is because episodes are often still being worked on within days of airing, explaining how the premiere was able to includeThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s cancellationas a major plot point.
Series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone previously admitted the season 27 trailer in April had footage specifically made for the trailer, meaning trailers aren’t an accurate depiction of what new episodes will feature.
Our Take On Homeland Security Using South Park To Promote ICE
With plans to continue making fun of Trump in their upcoming episode, it seemsthe conflict between the series and the US government is far from over. Homeland Security’s use of the image seems like another jab at the series, given the official response from the White House almost two weeks ago insulting the series' relevance.
As forSouth Parkseason 27, episode 2, the exact content of the episode won’t be certain until it arrives. There could be a storyline featuring Mr. Mackey and ICE, but whether the exact footage seen in the trailer shows up remains unclear. But, with nine episodes left, there might be more real-world responses to the show as weeks progress.
New episodes ofSouth Parkseason 27 air Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central.
