It’s been a few years since Square Enix held an E3 presentation, but the Japanese game publishing giant returned to the show for E3 2018.Square Enix kicked off its E3 2018 presentationwith a look atShadow of the Tomb Raider, the third game in theTomb Raiderreboot series, showing off a trailer that revealed the beginning moments of Lara’s latest adventure.

As can be seen in the trailer below,Shadow of the Tomb Raiderstarts off with Lara and Jonah in a rather perilous situation. The two adventurers are on their way to Latin America to search for an ancient Mayan artifact. Unfortunately, their plane is ripped apart, and the two are separated, leaving Lara alone to fend for herself in a dangerous jungle environment.

While Square Enix’s presentation gave fans a glimpse of the start ofShadow of the Tomb Raider, as well as some gameplay footage, the game also had a presence at Microsoft’s event on June 10.Shadow of the Tomb Raiderwas showcased during Microsoft’s E3 2018 presentation through aneven more extensive story trailer, which highlighted the plot of the nextTomb Raidergame.

As revealed by Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference,Shadow of the Tomb Raiderwill see Lara attempt to hunt down an ancient Mayan artifact. However, Lara ends up triggering the apocalypse, and must figure out how to save the world while also fighting off the increasingly dangerous threat of the malevolent Trinity organization.

It’s been teased in the past thatShadow of the Tomb Raiderwill be one of Lara’s darkest adventures yet. From what we’ve seen of the game so far, it looks like the developers are set to deliver on that promise onceShadow of the Tomb Raiderlaunches for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year.

Shadow of the Tomb Raiderwill launch on September 14 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
