It’s been quite some time since fans of the tactical shooter seriesSOCOMgot a new entry in the franchise, but a new rumor says that aSOCOMmay be in development for the PlayStation 5. Nothing has been confirmed thus far, but it may make sense for Sony to have a solid FPS game lined up for its next-gen console.

The rumor comes from Twitter user and games industry insider Tidux, who claims that the game is now in development by Guerrilla Games. The move would make sense, especially if it’s already been in development for a few years. ASOCOMtitle as a launch game for the PS5 could be a potential system seller for Sony. It likely wouldn’t be able to compete withHalo Infinite, which is a launch game for Xbox Project Scarlett, but it would at least provide a compelling reason to pick up a PS5 close to launch. Guerilla Games also developedKillzone Shadowfallfor the PS4 as a launch title, so it would essentially set a trend for the developer making FPS launch games.

Back in April, a job listing hinted thatGuerrilla Games is working on a big multiplayer game, and that certainly supports this rumor. There hasn’t been a newSOCOMgame since 2011’sSOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals, so the time is certainly right for a new entry in the franchise, whatever that may wind up being.

Of course, these rumors are unconfirmed, so it’s best to take them with a grain of salt. There’s no telling if the game is actually in development, let alone a potential launch title. Guerrilla Games is also rumored to be working on aHorizon Zero Dawnsequel, and while the studio is large, two triple-a games may take quite the toll. Still, both games would likely prove to be wildly popular among the Sony fanbase.SOCOMmay not hold any of thebest shooters of all time, but they’re still certainly respectable games.

Time will tell whether or not the rumors actually turn out to be true, but here’s hoping they are.Sony skipped E3 last year, but this would be a great game to show off at the show if the company decides to venture back for E3 2020. Hopefully, Sony will have a few other tricks up its sleeve too.
