Most password managers have been working to add passkeys as a replacement to passwords. Passkeys are much more secure, as they eliminate the most insecure element of our logins (a secret, fixed string of characters that’s used to log into an account and that can leak) and replaces them with unique keys. The newer Proton Pass service has lacked Passkey support, but that’s now changing.

Proton has introduced an update toProton Passthat incorporates passkeys for secure authentication as a replacement for passwords on platforms and websites that supports them. Proton Pass’s implementation of passkeys is open source, allowing for community review and contributing to a more secure experience. Like all other Proton products, you can look at the inner workings of Proton Pass by checking its source code, and this will be no different for passkey support. You can also share passkeys just like passwords, which is alsosupported by 1Passwordand other competitors.

Passwords will still remain the main product of Proton Pass, just like how it is right now on otherpassword managers, as not every website or platform currently supports passkeys. This will be a gradual process, and we don’t expect passkeys to be mainstream for at least a few years now. However, if you want to switch to passkeys on the few services that supports them, you’ll be able to use Proton Pass for this.

There arestill some security concernswith Proton Pass, mostly that the account password for Proton Pass doesn’t work in the same way as 1Password, which uses a unique secret key in addition to a regular login password. Proton toldHow-To Geekthat it focuses on securing the main password instead of adding another one, using Secure Remote Password (SRP) and not storing any password data on its servers. There’s alsoa two-password modewhere you can put your whole Proton account behind two passwords instead of one, and the company providesa tool for creating a secure master password.

If you want to give passkey support a spin, the feature is now rolling out across all platforms Proton Pass is supported in.
