As part of its transition from EX Raid Boss to Tier 5 Raid Boss,Pokemon GO’s legendary Psychic-type Mewtwo losttwo of its most powerful moves. However, Niantic has seen fit to replace those moves with three more: Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Flamethrower. Turning Mewtwo into more of a generalist, Niantic has also made the legendary a bit harder to counter.
First off, the addition of Ice Beam to this legendary’s move set has turned Mewtwo into the best Ice-type attacker in the game. While manyPokemon GOfans may be upset over the loss of the aforementioned legacy moves, an Ice Beam Mewtwo can be a wrecking ball against Flying-type legendaries in raids. It’s also likely to stay this way until the gen 4 Mamoswine is introduced into the meta, so depending on the forthcoming raids, expect to see this combo.
With Thunderbolt, Mewtwo is the second best Electric-type in the game, competitive with Zapdos. The biggest advantage Mewtwo has over Zapdos is that it has less type weakness. Essentially, those who catch a Thunderbolt Mewtwo should choose it over Zapdos when the raid boss has moves to take down Zapdos. Nevertheless, Raikou remains the best Electric-type attacker in the game.
For the most part, Flamethrower Mewtwo isn’t worthwhile. It is outranked by other Fire-type legendaries, such as Moltres and Entei, but this is to be expected. Even with Mewtwo becoming more of a generalist, it couldn’t be the best of all three aforementioned types. Still, for those without the legendary Pokemon, this is a welcomed change-up to the raid roster, even thoughMewtwo’s catch rate was significantly nerfed.
Nevertheless, this only means players will have to come up with new ways to face down Mewtwo, especially considering it’s now-generalized move set. For news concerning Mewtwo, Deoxy, and thebeloved Dittonut, check back here, Ranters!
