It may be hard to believe it, but it’s actually been four years sincePokemon GOfirst released in July 2016. In the years since then, the game has evolved, released new featured, and cultivated an amazing community full of devoted fans. One of the surprising constants that has remained in place during those years has beenthe hard level cap of 40.
As a reminder to those who may be unaware, hitting level 40 inPokemon GOis no easy task. The game has an incredibly high XP curve and everything after level 35 is a brutal grind. Despite that, many trainers hit level 40 years ago and have been at the top of the cap gaining no significant benefits from XP bonuses since then. There have beenrumors that a level cap increase is coming toPokemon GO, but Niantic has been confirmed such speculation.

During a recent press event Game Rant attended, we had the chance to briefly discuss the possibility of giving level 40 players something else to do with XP in the mobile game. Although the primary focus of the event was on the upcomingPokemon GO Fest 2020 event, Niantic did humor us with a tease that, yes, something is in the works to make life a little more exciting for level 40 players.
“Are there plans that would allow level 40 players to do something with XP?”
“Yes, there are plans. That’s all I’ll say for now.”
Clearly the answer is pretty vague, but it is great to have actual confirmation that yes, there are plans. There were no additional hints about when those plans might be announced or whether it is something else to do with XP versus an increase in the level cap at this point.
