The Parent Television and Media Council is openly voicing displeasure with Disney’s decision to addDaredeviland other former Netflix-Marvel series to their Disney Plus streaming platform. The content in the fast-approaching series carries more violence and a mature subject matter that differs significantly from other offerings available on the platform, igniting the belief that the inclusion would “destroy the brand.”
The Parent Television and Media Council was founded in 1995 and lives by its mission to protect children from violence, profanity, and other forms of mature content in media because of their potential harmful long-term effects.Disney Plus is updating its parental control settingsin unison with the TV-MA series arrival, providing parents with the opportunity to add content rating restrictions to profiles, including a PIN to prevent changes for added comfort. Despite the council’s approval of the additional improvement, the mere presence of mature content likeDaredevilon the platform still presents an issue.

“For more than 98 years, the Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with the words Family Friendly, and I can think of no other corporation in American history that has been built more squarely on the backs – and on the wallets – of parents and families,” stated Tim Winter, president of the Parents Television and Media Council. Disney issued the decision to move theTV-MA content from Netflix to Disney Plusto ensure Marvel content lived in one singular place, but the trust the platform provided faces an obstacle with the newly added material. In addition, the move unintentionally placed more restrictions on a service that was relatively open for all age groups to enjoy.
“It seems wildly ‘off-brand’ for Disney Plus to add TV-MA and R-rated programming to this platform, ostensibly to increase subscription revenue. So what comes next, adding live striptease performances inFantasyland at Disney World?” continued Winter. “Disney is already at a competitive advantage with a streaming platform that is the safest one out there for families. Its foray into TV-MA-rated fare will forever tarnish its family friendly crown.” The concerns surrounding the addition of the series are understandable, but some may see the updated parental controls as a way to maintain the family-centric nature of the platform while equally opening the door for mature viewers to have something to invest in as well.
Disney Plus has a slew of content for younger viewers, but it’s hard to ignore the content already present that wades in mature waters. For example, many Marvel projects currently on the platform carry a PG-13 rating, which indicates that the films include violence, action, and some language. While the mentioned elements may be more potent in the incoming Netflix-Marvel series, their minor presence on the Disney Plus platform is generally tolerated by most parents. Some carry the belief that Marvel Studios films, such asAvengers: Endgame, are too violent for young viewers, while others see them as suitable family films. Ultimately, mature content has mildly been present, and while the intensity of the content is increasing, resections are being put in place to ensure parents have control over what is available.
Internationally, mature content is consistently visible on Disney Plus because of the unavailability of Hulu overseas. For instance, the R-rated filmNo Exitwas present on Disney Plus overseas but lived on Hulu in the United States. There appear to be no plans to alter the former Netflix series March 16th arrival, with certain discussions even hinting at the inclusion of R-ratedR-ratedDeadpoolon the platform in the future. It will be interesting to see if adding the content increases subscription rates or decreases it because of the platform’s “[tarnished] family-friendly crown.”
Daredeviland the rest of the Marvel’s former Netflix shows move to Disney Plus on July 09, 2025.
