Claire’s theory about Jane and Fanny’s mother came in the finale of season 7, when she heard the younger sister singing a song from the 20th century. It only took a moment for thisOutlandercharacter to decide that Faith Pocock was her own daughter.
Currently, Claire’s only evidence to support her theory that her daughter lived is a dream visit from Master Raymond and the song “I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside,” which was first recorded in 1909. Claire sang this same song to her seemingly deceased daughter back inOutlanderseason 2, but that’s still a stretch. If Faith survived, how would she remember the song to teach it to her daughters?
The only thing we can definitely confirm afterOutlanderseason 7is that Faith Pocock had some sort of connection to time travel. She could truly be anyone, and it will be up toOutlanderseason 8 to provide answers. However,newOutlanderfranchise lore could suggest that Faith Pocock shares a different sort of connection to Claire and the future.
Faith Pocock Could Be Claire’s Sibling In Outlander Rather Than Her Daughter
Though Claire concluded thatFaith Pocock was her daughter inOutlanderseason 7, the prequel series,Outlander: Blood of My Blood,has thrown new information into the mix. We discover in this series that Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia Beauchamp, didn’t die in a car crash after all. Instead, they traveled through time to the 18th century—just like Claire.
Exactly what happened to the Beauchamps is still uncertain, butBlood of My Bloodquickly revealed that Julia was pregnant when she disappeared. It’s a shocking revelation, since Claire never had any clue that she had a sibling. What’s interesting about this is that it offers another possible answer for howFanny Pocock knew the song “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside.”
According toOutlandercanon, the Beauchamps suffered their car crash in 1923. Since “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside” was first recorded in 1909, it would have already been in circulation for years before Claire’s parents disappeared. Julia likely knew the song, and, if she gave birth in the 18th century, she might have sung it to her second child as they grew up.
If “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside” is a Beauchamp family lullaby, thenit’s possible that Faith Pocock learned the song, not from Claire, but from Julia. This could mean that Fanny and Jane aren’t Claire’s granddaughters after all, but her great nieces. Still, there could be some value to Claire falsely believing that Faith Pocock is her daughter inOutlander.
Master Raymond May Only Want Claire To Suspect That Faith Lived
If there is anything we know for certain inOutlanderafter season 7, it’s that Master Raymond has something to do with the whole Faith situation. He appeared to Claire in a dream and apologized for something, only stating that Claire would soon understand. We assume that Master Raymond is sorry for keeping Claire’s daughter away from her, but it might be more complicated than that.
Perhaps, Master Raymond’s goal is actually to push Claire into researching Faith Pocock’s past, all so she can discover the truth about Julia.
Master Raymond is an ancient time traveler himself, and he’s something of a puppet master in theOutlanderfranchise. It’s possible that he intended to mislead Claire about Faith, making her believe that the infant survived to manipulate her into taking some specific action. Perhaps, Master Raymond’s goal is actually to push Claire into researching Faith Pocock’s past, all so she can discover the truth about Julia.
Precisely whyMaster Raymond wants Claireto know about the true fate of her parents is unclear. However, it’s evident that time travel happens inOutlanderfor specific reasons. Destiny is always at work, and we can count onOutlanderseason 8 bringing everything full circle.
Outlander’s Timeline Could Be A Problem For This Faith Theory
The theory that Faith Pocock is actually Claire’s sibling inOutlanderhas some problems. First, Julia is pregnant with this child in the early 18th century. Assuming that she gives birth at this point in the timeline, then Claire’s little brother or sister would be just slightly older than Jamie.Faith Pocock was a young woman when she died in the 1770s. It doesn’t quite line up.
Still,Outlanderis a time travel series, so anything is possible. Perhaps Julia made attempts to return to Claire in the 20th century with her second child, but ended up in a later point of the 18th century instead. It’s also possible that Faith Pocock herself traveled ahead a few decades, got trapped, and turned to prostitution to survive. At this point inOutlander’s story, the possibilities are endless.
