Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) were also visited by Sofia Caccimelio (Téa Leoni), who asked for help with finding her missing husband, who seemingly has ties to the mafia, and whose disappearance likely connects to Lester’s death.
While speaking withDeadline, Hoffman teases how the mafia-related mystery will feel different from anything the show has done before. He also hints at how this mystery connects to the mafia’s real-life power and how it will introduce a"pretty colorful"group of new characters. Check out Hoffman’s comments below:
What I think we’re doing in Season 5 is very different. We’re going straight into a New York story that’s happening very much currently. It’s also happening across the country, obviously, but also in the city itself. We’re pulling from the headlines to ask very specific questions about the balance of power in New York and who has that power. That’s what we’re really looking at — the shifting power dynamics of the country. And what’s really fun about it, the comedic side of it, is that the history of power in New York is pretty colorful, with the old mob and the new mob mixing in. What do those two look like, and how do they sit on either side, with our trio in the center of it?
What This Means For Only Murders In The Building
Due to the extensive power that the mafia wields in New York City, they are poised to be the most formidable threat that Charles, Oliver, and Mabel have faced so far. They have uncovered dangerous and resourceful killers before, but they have never had to contend with the might of an entire criminal organization.

This shift significantly elevates the dramatic stakes while also opening the door for some eccentric and comedic new characters.Only Murders in the Building’s season 5 new cast membersinclude Renée Zellweger, Keegan-Michael Key, Christoph Waltz, and Logan Lerman, and they may be playing some of the"colorful"characters who belong to the old or new mob.
The Hulu series has seen its fair share of eccentric and dangerous characters before, but never with the type of power that Hoffman teases. Discovering who killed Lester is a personal mystery for Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, but it is a mystery with far larger ramifications for all of New York City.
Our Take On John Hoffman’s Comments
Hoffman’s comments make me even more excited for the new season. Despite entering its fifth season and following a similar formula each time,Only Murders in the Buildingremains one of television’s funniest and most entertaining shows, and each season manages to feel surprisingly distinct.
Only Murders in the Buildingseason 5 will debut on Hulu on September 9 with the first three episodes.
Only Murders in the Building’s season 4 more personal casemade the story especially strong, and season 5 is poised to build on this momentum with the trio’s personal investment in learning who killed their building’s kindly doorman. There will still be a wide scope to this mystery, though, and it won’t require leaving New York City as in season 4.
