One Pieceepisode #1136 ended Kuma’s flashback arc with a bang, and it left plenty to be excited about for episode #1137 and beyond. The anime had a perfect understanding ofOne Piece’s most emotional story in years, and even if the story is returning to action, this arc won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

InOne Pieceepisode #1136, time had progressed to two years before the present i.e. the year Luffy first began his quest to become the Pirate King. At this point, Kuma was seen as nothing more than an unfeeling dog of the World Government, but in reality, he used what little time he had left to keep being a hero to the best of his abilities. It was as touching a sendoff to Kuma’s story a person could ask for, and it allowed episode #1136 to end on nothing but a high note.

One Piece Episode 1135 Review: A Perfect Handling Of An Emotional Story Arc

One Piece Episode 1135 In Review

Even withKuma’s flashback arccoming to a close, theOne Pieceanime is still more than succeeding in every regard. Visually speaking, while episode #1135 didn’t have any of the top-tier visualsOne Pieceis known for, it still looked gorgeous from start to finish, especially during Bonney’s big scene at the end of the episode, and with how important this arc has been, that’s exactly what needs to be seen.

Above all else, what made episode #1135 so great was everything that it did with Bonney. Between how well it highlighted her distress from Kuma’s absence to the catharsis of her finally taking her life into her own hands,One Pieceepisode #1135 did a perfect job of capping off Bonney’s emotional journey, at least as far as the flashback is concerned. There was no better way forOne Pieceepisode #1135 to go, and sure enough, episode #1136 was a perfect follow-up.

What Happened In One Piece Episode 1136?

Produced By Toei Animation; Directed By Yasunori Koyama

One Pieceepisode #1136, “Kuma’s Life”, picked up where episode #1135 left off, with Bonney finally leaving Sorbet to look for Kuma. Bonney figured that she could find Kuma if she became famous, which ultimately led to her becoming a Supernova, and as a bonus, she also decided to try and find Nika by the time they reunited.

Most of the episode then replayed parts of the pre-timeskip era from Kuma’s point of view. Kuma had apparently been keeping an eye on Luffy since he received his first bounty, and by the time ofthe Enies Lobby arc, he believed Luffy had inherited Nika’s will, a feeling further enforced by everything that happened at Thriller Bark.

At Sabaody Archipelago, Kuma gained further respect for Luffy when he discovered that Luffy had struck a Celestial Dragon. That action fully convinced Kuma that Luffy was destined to become a hero like Nika, sowhen Kuma separated Luffy from his crew, he did it not just so the Straw Hat Pirates could become strong enough for the New World, but so Luffy could achieve his destiny one day.

Soon, the Paramount War was on the cusp of starting, and at the same time, it was time for Vegapunk to install the final programming to erase Kuma’s free will. Right up until the end, Vegapunk kept begging for some leniency, only for Saturn to deny him at every turn, but he still secretly installed the program for Kuma to protect the Thousand Sunny until one of the Straw Hats returned.

In his last moments, Kuma thought back on his life one last time before Vegapunk erased his free will, all while tearfully remarking that Kuma was a hero. With his last words, Kuma asked Vegapunk to wish Bonney a happy 10th birthday when he saw her again, and the last scene of the episode cut back to Bonney in tears after seeing everything stored away in Kuma’s memories.

One Piece Closes Out Its Most Emotional Story On Nothing But A High Note

In terms of writing, while episode #1136 mostly served to clean up the last few bits of Kuma’s backstory, Kuma’s final moments all did a great job of emphasizing how he always strove to do good, no matter how much hardship he had to go through. The entire arc served to make Kuma one ofOne Piece’s most tragic figures, and overall, it more than succeeded.

Ever since its depiction in the manga, Kuma’s backstory has been heralded as one of the most emotional and all-around great stories in all ofOne Piece, and overall, it’s safe to say thattheOne Pieceanime made Kuma’s backstory just as great as it was in the manga, if not better.
