WhenNier: Automatawas released last year, it was greatly praised by players, leaving many anticipating a sequel. If a recent comment made by the acclaimed title’s director is anything to go by, it seems that fans can look forward to new entries in theNieruniverse in future.

While speaking at a panel at Pax East this weekend,Nier: Automatadirector Yoko Taro took some time to answer questions related to his work. In answering one of the questions related to potentially releasing new entries into the series, Taro stated that he does think that it would be possible to return to the series. He further went on to say that, although he does not know how long it might take, fans of the series can look forward to new content in future.

Although not all that much information about the content of a potential newNiergame was revealed during the panel, Taro did state that he is not a fan of the idea of direct sequels. This statement may imply that any new entry into the series may possibly just share theNieruniverse, instead of continuing the previous game’s story.

Despite being released at the same time asHorizon Zero DawnandThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildlast year,Nier: Automataproved to be an unexpected success. The game has gone on to sell over 2.5 million copies since release and even resulted in Square Enix announcing an increase in operating income. Critics largely lauded the game, praising its captivating narrative and fluid combat system.

With Taro’s comment related to direct sequels in mind, it will be interesting to see what the next entry into theNierseries will look like, especially as many players already feel thatNier: Automatais somewhat of an eccentric game in itself. Although no release date for any such project was suggested, many fans of the title will be glad to know that the title’s director is at least thinking of returning to the game’s universe.

Nier: Automatais available now on PC and PS4.
