As Marvel debuts a powerhouse newCaptain America, Major Dave Colton starts off on the right foot by provinghe’s just as unstoppable as Steve Rogers. Fans have only known the new Cap for a single issue, but this American hero has proved he’s no John Walker-esque pretender - he’s the real deal.
Marvel just launched a new volume ofCaptain Americafrom Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti, Frank Martin and Joe Caramagna. The story takes place in the days and weeks after Steve Rogers was unfrozen in the modern day. However, as Steve adjusts to the modern day, fans also meet Major Colton - a young kid who witnessed the events of 9/11, becoming the next generation of Super-Soldier in response.
Not yet ready to join the Avengers, Cap returns to the military, where he’s paired up withMajor Colton as the new Captain America. However, Colton isn’t Steve’s sidekick, and his first words in Marvel continuity prove it.
The New Captain America Can’t Back Down
Major David Colton Can Do This All Day
Colton goes on to explain that"the world has gone mad, and good, sane men are the only cure.“Even as he speaks, Steve Rogers' narration asks,“If I wouldn’t turn my back on a neighbor in need, how could I turn my back when other nations were on fire?“The moment of Colton stating he’s unable to refuse the call to duty - even when the army doesn’t want him - showshe has the same iron will as Steve Rogers, driven by a sense of morality so strong, hemustobey it at all costs. However, is another Steve Rogers necessarily a good thing?
Is the New Captain America Hero or Villain?
Steve Rogers' Unbreakable Will Would Make for a Powerful Foe
While Colton should logically be perfect forthe role of the new Captain America(indeed, Super Soldier experiments leave himeven bigger and stronger than Steve), the comic seems to be depicting him in a more questionable light. Colton seems to be driven by the death of his brother and his mother states that,“You need therapy, not a gun. Not some racist war.”
It seems that Steve Rogers' heroic career in WWII will be contrasted with Colton’s service in a more complex, controversial conflict. Indeed,so far Colton is being presented as Steve Rogers' would-bereplacement, rather than his successor.
Captain America has fought Thanos, Ultron and Mephisto thanks to his unbreakable will, leading the Avengers to defeat evil and make the world a better place. However, the new Captain America Major Dave Colton has the same unbreakable will with a different idea of what it means to protect the world. Time will tell if the newCaptain Americais hero or villain, but his first words in Marvel lore do tell fans one thing - whichever path he chooses, he’llneverback down.
Captain America #1is available now, withCaptain America #2coming August 6 from Marvel Comics.
