Sony’sUnchartedmovie, based on the popular Naughty Dog video game franchise, wasrecently delayed to March 2021. It was the latest in a series of delays which have marred the production over a number of years, but according to a Naughty Dog head the future may still be bright for its popular game series.

The topic came up during the last episode of RETRO Replay’sThe Last of Usplaythrough uploaded to YouTube February 25, where hosts Nolan North and Troy Baker interviewed Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie, andThe Last of Us' Creative Director Neil Druckmann. Around the 44-minute mark, Druckmann talks about howThe Last of Uswas such a successthat they did not know how to top it, and thus moved on to other projects because Sony was open to it.

He relates that to the challenge of following up the originalUncharted, and goes on to say they have not yet worked on a follow-up to 2016’sUncharted 4: A Thief’s End, but that “maybe one day we will.” North, who voices the series' protagonist Nathan Drake, says “we’ll talk about it” before rightfully assuming the Internet would take what they said and run with it.

Tom Holland, who will play a younger version of Nathan Drake in theUnchartedmovie alongside Mark Wahlberg’s Victor “Sully” Sullivan, has talked about howUncharted 4will be a major influence on the filmdespite it being a prequel. That leaves plenty of room for the Naughty Dog team to write another sequel to Nathan Drake’s story should they desire it.

For now all the developers' attention is focused on gettingThe Last of Us 2out the door, which by all accounts should be a harrowing experience given its"M" rating from the ESRB. After that, who knows what the future holds for the ever-popular treasure hunter once his movie (hopefully) makes it safely to the silver screen.
