The recent August 04, 2025, update forMonster Hunter Wildsincluded the game’s first collaboration content, but it also added new quests to address the difficulty of some monsters. Ever since the event quest featuring Arch-Tempered Rey Dau, players have been asking Capcom for more challenges from the game’s strongest monsters. One quest in particular ramps up the difficulty to its max, putting even veteran hunters to the test.
Ever since its release, thedifficulty ofMonster Hunter Wildshas been called into question, withmany long-time fans of the series claiming new systems make monsters much easier to defeat. The Focus system and more wounds appearing on monsters seem to support this claim, even in high-rank hunts. Without series competition, those who reach higher Hunter Ranks are almost uncontested by any creature they fight.
Arch-Tempered Monsters Started Adding More Difficulty To Wilds
Title Update 1 Started Introducing More Challenging Fights
Thankfully, the inclusion of new monsters inTitle Update 1 added significantly more difficulty to huntswithin the game. The biggest example of this was Arch-Tempered Rey Dau, a thunderous evolution of the flying wyvern seen in multiple stages ofMonster Hunter Wilds. Unlike battle-hardened Tempered monsters, this Arch-Tempered creature featured much stronger attacks, higher health, and more resistance for players to encounter.
Arch-Tempered Rey Dau was encountered through a limited-time event quest called"A Silent Flash.“Other Arch-Tempered monsters are expected to appear in future event quests, with more damage, higher health, and greater resistance to wounding, stun, and other staggering attacks from all hunter weapons.
Thefinal boss of the Low Rank story mode also made a return in Title Update 1, now as a permanent quest players can do once again. This boss was once only locked to the story, only giving players one chance to defeat it. Now,Zoh Shia inMonster Hunter Wildsis a creature hunters can take down repeatedly in a far more difficult quest than some other Apex monsters can offer.
Both of these creatures added more difficulty to a select couple of hunts, but only in limited amounts.Arch-Tempered Rey Dau only exists in short time windows, while Zoh Shia appears in 8-star Investigations, which are tricky to find. I found that just these two monsters as an added challenge was a step in the right direction, but very limited options for those looking for some extra bite from the Forbidden Land’s creatures.
8-Star Tempered Monsters Were Added With Far More Health In New Quests
May 2025 Update Added Stronger Versions Of Existing Apex Monsters
With theStreet Fighter 6crossover contentincluded in the July 20, 2025, update forMonster Hunter Wilds, other monsters were added to the game.8-Star Tempered versions of Apex monsters were included in the update, creating much stronger versions of the dominant creatures of different regions.
Now the highest level of difficulty in any quests, 8-Star Tempered monsters offer a suitable challenge for even the strongest builds hunters have made. The quests added in the May 2025 update include 8-Star Tempered variants of the following monsters:
These monsters have been reworked behind the scenes at Capcom to be the fiercest foes yet, with several behavorial changes to make them smarter and stronger. For example,8-Star Tempered monsters have the highest health of any creatures in the game, giving them far longer survivabilty. This makes it harder for hunters to wound these monsters or make them weaker without dealing lots of damage to them first.
The health changes of 8-Star Tempered monsters extend into multiplayer as well. As of the May 2025 update, these new 8-Star monsters have even greater boosts to their health when hunted by multiple players, at even greater levels than similar buffs granted to monsters during less difficult quests.
Each of these 8-Star Tempered monsters has far greater resilience to mechanics that players have attributed to the lowered difficulty as well. In almost a direct response to player concerns,Capcom has made these Apex creatures much harder to wound, stun, stagger, or inflict with status conditions. As a result, when those conditions do occur, it feels far more earned for a hunter’s accumulated skill.
8-Star Tempered Gore Magala Represents The Final Challenge For Any Veteran Hunter
The Lord Of Frenzy Is Tougher Than Ever Before
Out of all the 8-Star Tempered monsters added into the recent update, Gore Magala represents the highest possible challenge.8-Star Tempered Gore Magala is the strongest monster in the game and one of the hardest to defeat, acting at least on par with Arch-Tempered Rey Dau. Even without considering the other 8-Star Tempered Apexes, this version ofGore Magala inMonster Hunter Wildsrepresents a new level of difficulty.
One of the reasons why 8-Star Tempered Gore Magala is so hard to defeat is due to its absurd health. The other 8-Star Tempered monsters have much higher health than other monsters in the game, sometimes in the range of 20,000-25,000 HP total. However,Gore Magala has around 55,000 health at leastagainst solo hunters, having over double the HP of monsters who are already leagues above many others.
To put this health value into perspective, consider one of the most durable monsters inMonster Hunter World- Alatreon. From theIceborneexpansion, Alatreon was undoubtedly the monster with the highest health at 54,000 when fought by a solo hunter. The new Gore Magala is 1,000 HP over this value, putting it among one of the most challenging fights of past games.
8-Star Tempered Gore Magala is found through Investigations, similar to Zoh Shia following the Title Update 1 content. The other 8-Star Tempered monsters from the May 2025 update are found in the same way.
When combined with Gore Magala’s Frenzy mechanic and already high damage output, this new 8-Star Tempered variant can one-shot most hunters. Even with the strongest gear and defense, you’ll have a hard time surviving against this Tempered variant long enough to take it down. This fight is a test of endurance as much as it is a DPS check to kill Gore Magala before the quest timer runs out.
This challenge has been both hailed and criticized already by fans of the series, with some celebrating Gore Magala’s difficulty while others do not agree with extra health being the main source of its toughness. No matter where you stand, the extreme difficulty presented by all 8-Star Tempered monsters inMonster Hunter Wildsadds content players have been asking for, which bodes well for future updates.
