When the milestone family sitcomModern Familycame to an end five years ago, there were inevitable rumors about spinoffs.Modern Familyendswith most members of the central extended family taking off on different adventures, potentially setting up spinoffs focused on one or multiple OG characters in a new setting.
As the older kids of theDunphy-Pritchett-Tucker clanprepare to travel for school, work, and leisure, Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell) talk about spending some time on the road, andCam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) are moving out to Missouri with their kids for Cam’s new job,and to be closer to his family.
This last development was the most likely starting point for aModern Familyspinoff, but the series never came to fruition. In a recent interview withCollider, star Julie Bowen mentioned this spinoff that never happened. WhileBowen has “no idea what happened with” the Cam and Mitch show, she would love to guest-star on it. Check out her full comments below:
There was a spin-off for a second that didn’t go, so maybe that gave somebody cold feet. I have no idea. It was all during COVID. […]
It was Cam and Mitchell on a farm. The gay couple goes and lives back on a farm. I have no idea what happened with it. I wasn’t involved with it. I would always support them and love them, but maybe they just need to give it a minute. Or they’re casting for younger people right now. […]
[…] I’ve always said that we’d all show up in a cow field… This is not a cow field. It’s a beautiful, beautiful golf course. But I’d show up anywhere for that group of people, much like I’ll show up for Adam [Sandler] if he calls. There are a few projects where you just go, “Yes. Whatever you need.” Because it provided me with so much joy, and it has benefited me in every way — emotionally, financially, all the ways. So, you just show up. I would love that.
What Julie Bowen’s Comments Mean For The Canceled Modern Family Spinoff
PerDeadline, the cast and crew were very confident in the idea they had forCam and Mitch’s spinoff as of January 2021, but it was ABC that passed on the show. Years later, Eric Streetstone reportedly said that the decision was “a little hurtful,” and that he believed the series was “a slam dunk.”
However, the way Bowen tells it, aModern Familyspinoff is still up in the air.She suggests that the aftermath of COVID-19 could have added to the pressure, resulting in the network’s decision, and that the producers might be working on something right now. Admittedly, Bowen was not ever directly involved with the proposed spinoff.
Yet Bowen does affirm that if this series or anotherModern Familyspinoff ideawere eventually greenlit, she and potentially the rest of the original cast would be there to guest star.Modern Familywas known for running a tight-knit production, and it would appear that the actors harbor enough loyalty and affection that they will always show up for a new project.
Our Take On A Modern Family Spinoff Still Potentially Happening
They Have Lost Momentum On A Modern Family Continuation By Now
Cam and Mitch’s story would probably have worked best as a spinoff rather than one focusing on any otherModern Familycharacter,as this series would have carried over multiple characters from the flagship, while being perfectly set up to explore a different set of extended family dynamics with LA family members occasionally visiting Missouri.
Regardless of what series the producers will make, the cast would bring back the wonderful on-screen chemistry of people who truly view each other as family. However, ABC passing on the previous idea does not bode well for aModern Familyspinoff ever being made; it doesn’t really make sense that they would do it now and not then, despite Bowen’s comments.
