KPop Demon Huntersstar Arden Cho addressed what happened to Jinu and whether he will return. The popular animated movie centers on Huntr/x, a K-pop musical group that protects the world from demons. Alongside Cho, who voices Rumi, thecast ofKPop Demon Huntersincludes May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Ken Jeong, and Ahn Hyo-seop.
Jinu (Ahn) is initially intent on challenging Huntr/x,but he has a change of heart when he discovers that Rumi is part demon. While he abandoned his family and is working for Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun), Jinu grows close to Rumi, who seeks to help him. However, he appears to die in the end.
During an interview withCollider, Cho addressed whether Jinu is actually dead and if he could return in apotentialKPop Demon Hunterssequel. Without directly confirming Jinu’s fate,Cho revealed that she did not want to imagine he had really died.She added that, because his character is a demon, “he was already dead.” Check out her comments below:
I hate to say the word “dies,” because in my mind, I’m not… May there be a symbol, and may he come back. Like, I know, obviously in the movie, someone does [come back], but exactly — does he? It’s animation, and it’s magical. I had a friend point out, he’s always been dead — like, he was a demon, so in a sense, he was already dead, and maybe a little more dead, but not removed. Does that work? We all agree.
Cho also explained thatbecause Jinu gave himself up for Rumi,the movie managed to evoke strong emotions from viewers.She then stated that she is not entirely sure what will become of Jinu and that she even tried going to the co-writers and directors for answers. Read more of Cho’s comments below:
If he did not sacrifice or do what he did, this movie would not have had the response that it did, right? Like, yes, I know it’s painful. Yes, I know we’re all mad, but like… mad in a good way, right?
Of course I have definitely hounded Maggie Kang and Chris Applehans,been like, “Tell me the truth. What does it mean?” And because, you know, at the end, we’re just actors — I’m just merely an actor. I have no idea. Our storytellers, writers, and directors have all the power and all the ownership of it, and they did it perfectly, even though some people got mad… like, our core directors got some dumb friends. Yeah, sweet everything.
What This Means For KPop Demon Hunters
The relationship between Rumi and Jinu is a major part ofKPop Demon Hunters. There has been discussion about how good or bad Jinu actually was; while he may have been dishonest about his background,he seemed prepared to help Rumi close the Honmoonbefore Gwi-Ma intervened.
When Rumi approaches Gwi-Ma, she is nearly overpowered, until Jinu sacrifices himself. During that emotional moment,Jinu apologizes to Rumi and confesses that she had saved him,before ultimately giving his soul to her. Theending ofKPop Demon Hunterssuggests that Jinu is dead, but his return is still possible, and could be part of a potential sequel.
Our Take On Jinu’s Fate In KPop Demon Hunters
Considering howsuccessfulKPop Demon Huntershas been, breaking Netflix streaming records and charting on Billboard, a sequel seems likely. And, should any future movies continue following Rumi,it would be hard to imagine not bringing Jinu back in some capacity.
If Rumi now holds part of Jinu’s soul, perhaps she will be able to find a way to revive him in anotherKPop Demon Huntersfilm. Their connection and budding romance feels too significant to discard, and from what audiences know about Jinu and his past, there is a lot of growth he can have as a character.
