There have been several rumors and fan requests for a remake of the classicChrono Trigger, and for a few days, it looked like a remake might haveaccidentally been confirmed by co-creator Yuji Horii. Unfortunately for fans, it appears this alleged remake comment was all a misunderstanding. During the Napoli Comicon, fans in attendance alleged that Horii slipped up and “confirmed” a remake ofChrono Trigger. Other fans in attendance refuted these claims, and now Square Enix has made an official statement about the incident.

According toGameSpark(text in Japanese, translated byGenkion X), Square Enix has made a statement that the rumors of aChrono Triggerremake are false, and that what Horii said was not translated correctly, saying:“It is a mistranslation regarding a Chrono Trigger Remake. Horii-san never made any such statement”(viaGamesRadar+). Horii did state, “I get a lot of requests for the remake of Chrono Trigger as well, and so I am starting to contemplate on it,“but a remake ofChrono Triggerhas not been confirmed.

Square Enix Denies Yuji Horii Is Remaking Chrono Trigger

But That Doesn’t Mean The Game Doesn’t Exist

It’s worth noting —Square Enix did not deny the existence of aChrono Triggerremakein its statement, just that what was allegedly stated by Horii was a mistranslation. It doesn’t seem likely that a remake is currently in development, but one could exist, either developed by another studio or at Square Enix. Square Enix is currently developing the final entry in theFF7 Remaketrilogy,Kingdom Hearts 4,Dragon Quest 12, anew IP in collaboration with TBS Television, and a few more projects.

With so many games in development at once, plus a “reboot” in its business philosophy, with a change in strategy set to focus on “quality over quantity,” instead of several IPs at once,it doesn’t seem likely that aChrono Triggerremake is in development currentlyat Square Enix. But the publisher has collaborated with several studios in the past, so it’s not entirely off the table.

Our Take: A Remake Seems Likely

Just Not Anytime Soon

In addition to the aforementioned projects, aremake ofFinal Fantasy 9has been teasedand rumored for a while now. With that possible game, plus the final entry in theFF7 Remakeproject in development, there is probably not enough room for aChrono Triggerremakeanytime soon. But given Horii’s statement about his contemplation of doing a remake of the game, a remake is probably somewhere in Square Enix’s pipeline, just not at the front.

Chrono Triggerremains one of the most popular and most well-received JRPGs in history. After Square Enix completes its new business strategy change in March 2027, the discussion of a remake of the beloved game may be back on the table.
