I’m a major fan of one underrated character inThe Lincoln Lawyer, but I’m still worried about their season 4 return after last year’s disappointing storyline. Netflix has produced a large number of hit TV shows with passionate fan bases, and one of the best isThe Lincoln Lawyer. Although I’m picky aboutlegal dramas, I also became invested in the show as soon as I watched the first episode.

One thing that feels different about The Lincoln Lawyer compared to some legal dramas is the amount of attention that goes into developing the characters. They don’t feel flat or stereotypical. They have different personalities and internal motivations. Ultimately, the story is just as much aboutThe Lincoln Lawyer’s characterarcs as it is about the court cases. Unfortunately, one disappointing storyline from season 3 makes me worried for one of my favorite characters in the show.

Izzy Is One Of The Most Underrated Characters In The Lincoln Lawyer

The Hatred For Izzy Discounts Her Positive Contributions To The Story

Since the beginning, the reaction to Izzy has been very divided. In fan spaces, I’ve seen love for the character but also a ton of Izzy hatred. I can’t understand why. Izzy is a deeply underrated member of The Lincoln Lawyer’s cast. I love the energy and unique perspective that she brings to the group. She also offers witty remarks that offer levity to heavier moments. Izzy and Lorna have a great rapport, which makes them fun to watch together. She’s a well-rounded character who has a great personality, rather than existing to push the story forward.

The character’s experience with opioid addiction also gives Mickey someone who understands his illness and the process of recovery firsthand.

Izzy looks serious in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3

Still, Izzy has a narrative benefit. Unlike Mickey, she’s actually been the defendant in the legal system, giving her insight that Mickey lacks until season 4. The character’s experience with opioid addiction also gives Mickey someone who understands his illness and the process of recovery firsthand. She also genuinely believes that Mickey is trying to do good, making her one of his biggest supporters. There are so many reasons to love Izzy, and I don’t understand the people who speak about her with such vitriol.

Izzy’s Storyline In The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 Was Distracting

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 Was Too Jam Packed

Even though I think Izzy is underrated, I also can understand the issues The Lincoln Lawyer fans had with her season 3 storyline. She had a practical role in the central story in seasons 1 and 2, but her arc really floundered in season 3. As someone who had to pivot their career plans after an injury, I have a lot of empathy for Izzy and her dance career. That being said, Izzy’s dance storyline in season 3 took too much time away from the main storyline, and it didn’t feel like it ever connected.

Back when TV seasons were fifteen to twenty seasons long, a subplot about Izzy’s career prospects would have been a great way to break up the main storyline and offer more dimension to the supporting character. However, with just ten episodes,it already felt like the creative team was trying to jam-pack as much story as possible into a limited amount of time.

As beautiful as Jazz Raycole’s dance was, the story didn’t need that scene. They could have decreased the amount of screentime that the dance subplot took up while still keeping its essence and character development. To be honest, I even felt like Lorna’s first day took a lot of time and focus away from the central mystery, though that at least connected to the law and Mickey’s legal practice.

After Izzy’s uneven and distracting storyline in season 3, I’m worried about what they’ll do with her in season 4. Because Izzy is, for all intents and purposes, an original character, the creative team on The Lincoln Lawyer can’t just pull her storyline from the book. They will need to create something entirely new for her. Izzy needs to have the same lovable personality, but a more significant role in the central storyline, rather than just carrying her own subplot.

The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 does not have a release date yet, but filming wrapped on June 19.

It’s tougher to make Izzy integral because she isn’t a lawyer like Lorna and Maggie, and she isn’t an investigator like Cisco. However, since she’s the office manager now as of theend ofThe Lincoln Lawyerseason 3,she could help do research and management like Lorna did in season 1. They will need extra help now that Mickey will be focused on his own trial. They could also have Izzy emotionally support Hayley and maybe even Maggie during Mickey’s trial inThe Lincoln Lawyerseason 4, since she can’t offer Mickey and the gang as much practical, legal support.
