With theHarry PotterTV series underway, the franchise has a chance to fix a notable Cedric Diggory mistake from the movies. While the series is not set to release for another year and a half, HBO has provided fans with a plethora of sneak peeks, including announcements about theHarry Pottershow’s new Harry, Ron, and Hermione actors.
Despite some initial concerns over Warner Bros.' decision to reboot the iconic franchise,HBO’sHarry PotterTV showis proving its dedication to being faithful to J.K. Rowling’s original work. While the series will no doubt make changes to theHarry Pottermoviesand the source material, HBO has the perfect opportunity to fix one mistake from the original films.
Harry Potter’s TV Show Must Include That Harry Offered His Triwizard Tournament Winnings To Cedric’s Family
One of thesaddest deaths inHarry Potterwas Cedric Diggory’s murder at the Triwizard Tournament. The film series’ fourth installment,Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, follows Harry as he is mysteriously entered into one of the most dangerous magical competitions. When Harry is brought face-to-face with Voldemort, things go from bad to worse.
While Cedric’s death and his father’s reaction remain just as heartbreaking two decades after the film’s theatrical release,The Goblet of Fireleft out one major detailfrom the books. Originally,Harry offered up his Triwizard Tournament winnings to Cedric’s family.Feeling responsible for Cedric’s demise, his gift reminds readers just how big Harry’s heart really is.
This small detail, excluded fromThe Goblet of Fire, may have gone unnoticed initially, but with an entire season dedicated to each book, there is no reason for it to be left out again. By choosing to skip past Harry’s offering to Cedric’s family, the movie ignores a key part of his character, but HBO has the chance to fix it.
Offering The Diggory Family His Winnings Fixes A Common Harry Potter Complaint
Cedric’s death wasn’t the only time Harry offered his money to a family in need. In addition to the Diggory family, some of Harry’s Triwizard Tournament earnings also went to Fred and George Weasley for their prank shop, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. However, multiple complaints have surfaced from readers regarding Harry’s gifts to the remaining members of the Weasley family.
The Weasleys were known to be very poor in theHarry Potteruniverse, yet at no point does Harry try to donate some of his parents’ money to them. Surely Molly and Arthur would have rejected his offer, but it would be very fitting of his character to at least attempt to help them out.
HBO’s new series has the perfect opportunity to fix its massive Harry problem, one that the movies failed to address. While Harry is still considered a very considerate character in the films, the newHarry Potterseries can still make some improvements and further expand on J.K. Rowling’s universe.
