HBO’s dedicated streaming service HBO Max launched with a heap of content earlier this year, and like every streaming service, the executiveshave rushed to put more original series in the pipeline.Lovecraft Country, an adaptation of the novel of the same name, has been in development with some of Hollywood’s top talent, and now the horror television series finally has a release date.

Lovecraft Countryfollows the story of an African-American man who travels across America in the 1950s in search of his missing father. The series is said to explore racial tensions during the Jim Crow era of the US and will feature “monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.” The series stars Jonathon Majors (When We Rise),Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights),and Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson).

In a new poster for Lovecraft Country with the tagline “be careful what you search for,” HBO has revealed the series will premiere on August 16 on HBO and will be available for streaming on HBO Max. Episodes will air weekly with ten in the first season.

Lovecraft Countrycomes from executive producers Jordan Peele, Misha Green, and J.J. Abrams who are all veterans of sci-fi and horror. Jordan Peele was behind the hit dramaGet Out,andLovecraft Countryseems to be following in the same footsteps byexploring racial tensions through horror. A trailer was released for the show earlier in June showcasing the show’s creepy vibe.

H.P. Lovecraft-inspired stories have been the basis for many hit projects even spurning their own genre of “Lovecraftian horror.” Roleplaying games such asWorld of WarcraftandCall of Cthulunotably draw from Lovecraft mythos, as well ashorror games such as theAmnesiaseries. Lovecraft fans should be excited to see what new horrorsLovecraft Countryhas in store when it debuts in August.

Lovecraft Countrywill premiere on August 16 on HBO and HBO Max.
