Way back in 2001, Piranha Bites released the fantasy RPG,Gothic. At the time of its release, the game received favorable reviews and moved enough copies to become a full franchise. TheGothicfranchise would release two direct sequels and three spinoff games throughout the 2000s and early 2010s, but the franchise went on a complete hiatus in 2011. Now it appears that THQ Nordic is gearing up to bring the franchise back in a big way.
The firstGothicgame has a rather unique setup as far as high fantasy RPGs go. In the world, a human kingdom is fighting a losing war against Orcs, and the only chance it has involves magical ore that must be extracted from mines. To mine this ore, the kingdom takes all of its prisoners and sends them to these mines which are extremely dangerous, and overseen by powerful wizards. The main plot of the firstGothicinvolves the player trying to survive and eventually escape from one of these mines. While the game itself isn’t as popular as other fantasy series likeElder Scrolls,Gothichas been noted for its advanced AIat the time of its release.

In late 2019, THQ Nordicreleased a playable demo of a plannedGothicremake. The reception to the demo was very positive and prompted the company to move the game into full development. Earlier today, the company released a full trailer for the upcoming remake, which sadly doesn’t tell gamers a lot about the game itself. The majority of the trailer is a prolonged tracking shot that takes the viewer through the infamous mines and shows various characters toiling under harsh and backbreaking conditions. At the end of the trailer, several prisoners appear to be in one of the mine’s deeper, less explored parts who are then attacked by a giant spider before several other spiders join it.
TheGothictrailer was one of several new things that THQ Nordic showed off during today’s showcase. This included a new gameplay trailer forDestroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed, and a newSpongeBob SquarePantsgame titledSpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, among many others. Sadly, a release date for theGothicremake was not mentioned during the showcase.
Following the reception to the demo,THQ Nordic formed a new studio known as Alkimia Interactive, which was specifically made to work on theGothicremake. Around the same time, the company released a set of screenshots from the game giving gamers a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming remake. If this new trailer is anything to go on, however, the mines in the world ofGothicare a dangerous place that will give the player a few scares before they can escape it.
