There are plenty of horror games onSteam, but they’re mostly hit or miss. It’s hard to create a good horror title that doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or overused motifs and themes. So when a game likeThe Suppercomes along, horror fans should take note.
The Supperis ashort psychological horrorgame from Octavi Navarro and White Blanket Games, who specialize in bite-sized atmospheric tales of terror. The game is abeautifully stylized side-scrolling adventure gamethat explores thedarkest corners of the human mind.
And the best part is thatThe Supperis completely freeto download and play, something which every psychological horror fan should definitely do.
The Supper Is An Unsettling Free Point-And-Click
Don’t Forget The Red Sauce
The Supperfollows the kind Ms. Appleton, who works hard to cook up delicious meals for passing starving souls. Nevermind that the recipes she uses seem to usestrange ingredients like a wild pigeon and a “plump human hand”—and every meal needs to be covered liberally by the bubbling Special Sauce that’s cooking in the cauldron, of course.
Throughout the experience,a mysterious narrator speaks directly to Ms. Appleton. The protagonist herself seems to be an unwilling participant in the ordeal, gasping at unsettling meal orders and whispering a chill-inducing soft “sorry” before doing what must be done to acquire said meals.
The game uses a simplepoint-and-click mechanic to deliver its story, relying on puzzles to push the narrative forward. But the gameplay is secondary to theeerie atmosphere and unsettling tension, which is expertly built up by every small detail. The odd and creepy nature of the situation becomes apparent quickly, through details like the disturbing recipes, like Ms. Appleton’s unexplained two wooden legs, and the unsettling customers who come to dine at her cozy tavern.
