The fighting game community knows that the annual Evo tournament and theStreet Fighterfranchise go together like peanut butter and jelly. For years, the biggest fighting genre tournament event in gaming hasconcluded with theStreet Fighterportionand the winner of that section is unofficially considered the winner of the whole event by most circles. Evo is changing things up this time around though and handing off the featured card to the Nintendo brawler,Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
It’s no secret that it’s been a bit of an off year forStreet Fighter 5in terms ofnew fighters or content, but it is still coming as a big surprise to the community thatSuper Smash Bros. Ultimateis going to close out the 2019 Evo tournament. Evo head Joey Cuellar took to Twitter today to announce the final schedule and lineup of games andSmash Bros.is king of the hill.

Although Evo, or Cuellar, hasn’t announced an explanation for this change, it probably has something to do with themonster sales thatSmash Bros.deliveredover the last year. The game was a massive hit for the Nintendo console and the enormous roster of fighters helped build excitement and bring old players back to the franchise.Street Fighter Von the other hand had a relatively quiet year in terms of new content.
It will be very exciting to keep an eye on the viewership numbers for Evo when the event arrives and see how the finale numbers compare to previous years and also how they compare to theStreet Fighter Vnumbers earlier in the day on Sunday. IfSmashmanages to bring in a huge viewership, it’s possible that the title could return to the spotlight at next year’s event, as well.
