Game expansions can oftentimes be just as exciting, if not more so, as the base titles themselves. TheMorrowindexpansion for the popular Bethesda Softworks-published MMORPGThe Elder Scrolls Onlineseems no exception, and it’s only gaining more traction as it inches toward release. Today, a bundle of never-before-seenMorrowindscreenshots were released, showing off the expansion’s new Battlegrounds PvP mode.

The player-versus-player mode is set to be included inThe Elder Scrolls Online:Morrowindat its launch in June, and allows players to fight 12 at a time, in three groups of four contenders each, throughout the expansion’s many arena-like landscapes. One in particular is the Ashland regions of the Vvardenfell island, the lush and diverse environment in whichMorrowindis set.

Four screenshots feature a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming Battlegrounds PvP, showing off the variety of waysElder Scrolls Onlinefans can duke it out to the final finish. From creeping through rocky terrain on the way to combat to going head-to-head in a circular gameplay stage to see who reigns supreme, it appears that the PvP mode coming toMorrowindwill cover a fair bit of base.

Take a look at the images below:

The release of these stills follows closely after the debutMorrowindgameplay trailer, and only a month following the expansion’s actual announcement reveal. Given the success of the online role-playing game it expands upon, withThe Elder Scrolls Onlinerecently surpassing8.5 million players, incorporating an immersive in-game mode toMorrowindseems to be a smart move on the developers' behalf.

Similarly, player-versus-player modes have been highly sought after, but sometimes difficult to secure. In the recent past, The Pokemon Company has toyed with the idea of bringing aPvP modeto its successful mobile gamePokemon GO, but hasn’t made any definitive plans. Adding the mode toMorrowind, which includes both the largest zone expansion and a brand-new character class, may very well set a precedent for PvP inclusion, and may pull in a ton of newElder Scrolls Onlineplayers.
