With there still being quite a while to go beforeDetective Pikachufans are able to see the live-action film based on the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name in theaters, the movie has now added another actor to the cast list ahead of itsrelease date. As it so happens, theInceptionandBatman: Beginsactor Ken Watanabe will be joining the Universal Pictures and Legendary Entertainment project.
According toThe Hollywood Reporter, Ken Watanabe will be playing the role of Detective Yoshida, who happens to be a role specifically created for theDetective Pikachumovie, with the project set to start shooting in London this month. With the main thrust of the film’s story focusing on a teenager teaming up with Pikachu to find his kidnapped father, there’s no telling at this point in time as to how exactly Watanabe’s character will tie into the plot.
Now that Watanabe has signed on for theDetective Pikachumovie, he will be joining the likes ofDeadpool’s Ryan Reynolds, who will be voicing the titular Pocket Monster, as well asJurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s Justice Smith andBig Little Lies' Kathryn Newton. The film is set to be directed byGoosebumps' Rob Letterman, withGravity Falls' creator Alex Hirsch andGuardians of the Galaxyscribe Nicole Perlman handling the script.
As of now, theDetective Pikachumovie is set to come out in May of next year, so it’s likely that fans will need plenty to do to make the wait seem more bearable.Thankfully for Western audiences, the Nintendo 3DS game on which the film is based will finally be coming to Europe and North America in March 2018. With this being the case, gamers ought to have plenty of time to devote to the game and bone up on the source material before seeing the theatrical release.
