Bungie announced in a blog post this morning that it will be pushing back the release of their upcoming Shadowkeep Expansion forDestiny 2.
The expansion, which was due out September 17th, will now see its release on October 1st. It’s the first major expansion toDestiny 2since Bungiebroke away from Activition earlier this year. Alongside the announcement of the delay, Bungie also announced a new raid release date, a new Iron Banner, and an extension the Moments of Triumph event.

In the blog post,Bungie states that its fall releases“could use some more time in the oven” and cites their newfound independence as the reason the studio able to make these decisions. The blog post shows an awareness of their fan-base, apologizing for anyone who may have already planned to take the day off of work to play the game.

While it seemsDestiny 2fans will have to wait a little longer for the new expansion, it can’t be overlooked the benefit Bungie has in making decisions like this without having to get permission from a publisher. If Shadowkeep can do as well for Bungie as Forsaken did last year, the developer should be just fine on its own.
The extension to Moments of Triumph and the extra Iron Banner seemed designed to soften the blow of the delay to fans. Bungie says that it will have more to say next week.Destiny 2is also currentlyrunning its Solstice of Heroes event, so it seems there will be plenty to keep players busy while they wait for the upcoming expansion.
