Summary

Capcom has revealed a new remastered version of the originalDead Rising. It’s been almost a full decade since the latestDead Risingtitle was released back in 2016. After several hit installments on Xbox 360, andDead Rising 3serving as a launch title for Xbox One,Dead Rising 4received mixed reviews, likely leading to Capcom’s indefinite shelving of the action-packed zombie-killing franchise.

While the originalDead Risingwas exclusive to Xbox 360 when it first launched in 2006, an enhanced version of the game came to all major platforms a decade later in the run-up toDead Rising 4. Since then,Dead Rising’s sister zombie franchise,Resident Evil, has received a ton of attention from Capcom with a flurry of celebrated and successful remakes of classic titles likeResident Evil 2and4, as well as new first-person mainline entries, such asResident Evil Village. With all thesuccess ofResident Evilover the past five years, it’s easy to see why its lighter, more action-focusedDead Risingcounterpart remained in the shadows for so long.

Now, eight years after the franchise’s latest installment, Capcom has announced a current-gen remaster of the original game, namedDead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The announcement came by way of a short 40-second YoutTube trailer showing the game’s opening moments ofDead Risingprotagonist Frank Westleaping off a helicopter toward a zombie-infested mall. While the trailer was devoid of platforms or a release date, it’s a safe bet that it’ll land sometime later this year.

Even thoughDead Risingwas already enhanced for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2016, it’ll be nice for fans to get to experience the game with even better performance and visuals. This begs whether theDead Risingsequels will be next in line to receive the remaster treatment, as some of them are over a decade old. With that said, since Capcom seems to be taking a remaster approach toDead Rising, at least for the original game, hopes ofResident Evil-style ground-up remakes of these games are slim. It’s likely that Capcom sees more value in the proven success ofResident Evilremakes, and working on remakes for two different zombie franchises could muddy the waters. However, thepotential forDead Rising 5is still very much alive.

2024 has already been home to a bevy of interesting and well-received remasters and remakes thus far. Games likePersona 3 Reload,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,Braid: Anniversary Edition, andStar Wars: Dark Forces Remasterhave pleased gamers and turned new fans on to these beloved titles. IfDead Rising Deluxe Remasterdoes hit this year, it’ll join several otherXbox 360-era remasters likeEpic Mickey: Rebrushed,Lollipop Chainsaw: RePOP, andShadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered.
