Seasoned dungeon delvers and tabletop connoisseurs will want to keep their eye on Kickstarter this fall. The officialDarkest DungeonTwitter account announced that they would be partnering with Mythic Games to launch a Kickstarter campaign for a board game adaptation of the turn-based, Lovecraftian rogue-like.
Originally releasing in 2016,Darkest Dungeonvastly exceeded Red Hook Studios expectations in terms of sale and critical acclaim. Since then, the studio has produced several DLC expansions, and in an announcement that appeared to be an April Fool’s joke, the developer confirmedDarkest Dungeonwill receive multiplayer DLC in the future. A sequel was announced early in 2019, but scant information has arrived since the teaser trailer was unveiled.

While no hard information about the board game’s mechanics have been announced yet,Darkest Dungeonhas revealed an impressive set of painted miniatures representing the game’s classes. The video game’s RNG-heavy madness and stress management system should translate handsomely to dice rolls or card draws, and it is easy to imagine how procedural dungeons could be captured via modular map tiles, similar toBetrayal at House on the Hill. The most crucial element Mythic Game’s needs to capture, however, is the sense of dread and relentless pressure that establishesDarkest Dungeonas one of the hardest RPG’s ever.
Franchise fans will likely have a long wait ahead of them, for both the board game and video game sequel. No release date has been revealed forDarkest Dungeon 2, and since the Kickstarter campaign is launching in Fall, the board game likely won’t appear until 2021 at the earliest. Fortunately, there are plenty ofother grim-dark titles that will satisfyDarkest Dungeonveteransin the meantime.
