Slowly but surely, it’s become apparent that CD Projekt RED doesn’t just want Night City, the fictional setting forCyberpunk 2077, to look like a city of the future, but essentially function like one as well. As such, it has sought out the expertise needed to make its most ambitious open world to date a reality.
CD Projekt RED discussed this topic among others during today’s extensive “Deep Dive” video/Q&A session. In trying to realize its vision, the studio revealed that it hired actual city planners to help it design Night City.
All of it, from the streets to the buildings and everything in between, is being thought out with professional-grade care and attention to detail. According to Phillip Weber,Cyberpunk 2077’s quest designer, the studio is intent on having Night City feel as real as possible, right down to the way traffic flows through it.

On top of that, CD Projekt RED is striving to make the city’s layout as organic as possible, not just for immersion’s sake, but for the purpose of getting around with ease. SinceCyberpunk 2077will primarily be a first-person experience, it will be important for players to be able to tell where they are and how to get where they want to go just by looking around at their surroundings.
This should prove to be an interesting challenge.Cyberpunk 2077’s map is a much different beast than the massive world of the studio’s last game,The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Whereas that game’s map was generally flat, here Night City is a dense, three-dimensional labyrinth. Skyscrapers will be everywhere, and thesewill be filled with activities and side questsfor players to discover. If they want to catch everything the game will have to offer, they’ll have to be constantly looking up and down, not just all around.
For those who missed out, the Q&A that accompanied CD Projekt RED’s Deep Dive video also unveiled information on thenewly-detailed Pacifica district of Night City. Furthermore, it provides a clearer look at how deepCyberpunk 2077’s character customization system will get.
Cyberpunk 2077will be released on June 18, 2025, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
