Warning! Spoilers ahead for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, episode 7, “…All The Devils Are Here.”
Of all the agents inCriminal Minds: Evolution, Tyler Green’s path to the BAU was the most unorthodox. With a background in military intelligence, we met Tyler inEvolutionseason 1 as a would-be vigilante who infiltrated the Sicarius network to get revenge on the man who killed his sister years earlier. Now that Tyler is a fully instated BAU agent, actor Ryan-James Hatanaka is part ofthe main cast ofCriminal Minds: Evolution.
Luckily,Criminal Minds: Evolutiondecided to put its divisive love triangle aside, although the show has not given Tyler much of a personal arc since joining the BAU, as he’s faded more into the ensemble cast. However, after an uncharacteristically abrasive moment with Voit inCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3, episode 7, I’m worriedthe show is setting Tyler up to go down a very dark path.
Tyler Loses It While Dealing With An Uncooperative Voit In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3
Even Tara Lewis Notices & Warns Tyler About His Behavior With Voit
Voit has been an extremely helpful asset to the BAU, giving them as much information as he can remember and pushing to keep remembering even when it causes him emotional distress to learn about his past. Tyler is aggressive in asking why Voit would not have shared his fascination with Sicarius spiders with any of his acolytes. It’s a chilling way of framing it - most people wonder what would drive anyone to do anything violent, but Tyler is focused on what Voit was holding back, almost intuitively understanding the dark desire.

Tyler even threatens Voit’s immunity deal, which is contingent on Voit’s cooperation. Tara Lewis notices Tyler’s combative behavior, reminding him - and us - of Tyler’s long, tenuous history with Voit. Tyler says it won’t happen again, but he doesn’t offer any explanation or apology. I thought Tyler’s dark side was gone, but seeing how quickly his anger resurfaces, I now thinkTyler’s denying a part of himself that Voit seesclearly. InCriminal Minds: Evolution, season 3, episode 6, Voit said Tyler can’t fake the darknesshe saw in every one of his followers.
Tyler May Have Been Able To Repress His Anger As Long As Voit Is Cooperative
Tyler Has Not Forgotten His Long, Complicated History With Voit (Who He Tried To Kill In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 1)
Whoever is leading the new version of Voit’s network is doing everything in their power to reawaken the old Voit, so Voit is going to have to dig deeper into the painful childhood that led to his murderous adulthood. Earlier inCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3, Voit’s recoverywas being constantly monitored by Dr. Ochoa. Now the BAU is forcing his memories back, even though Tara expressed concern that each new memory could have the effect of finally flipping the switch and returning Voit to his old self.
When evil inevitably wins the push-pull battle for Voit’s soul, this could be the very thing that tips Tyler over the edge into his own darkness.
Tyler’s anger was triggered by the very first instance of Voit being anything but overtly helpful. Tyler has seemingly kept his calm through much more personal confessions from Voit earlier this season - specifically when Voit remembered and shared why he dated Tyler’s sister and how even her goodness didn’t sate his desires for long. Now, Tyler completely loses his cool when Voit shows the slightest, most understandable pushback. Tyler wasn’t momentarily angry with Voit - I think he is always angry with Voit and barely keeping his emotions in check while Voit is on his best behavior.
As Voit remembers more of his past self, some of his old emotions come to the surface. His snark is returning, like when he dares Tyler to throw him in jail if he’s breaking his deal. When evil inevitably wins the push-pull battle for Voit’s soul, this could be the very thing that tips Tyler over the edge into his own darkness.
How Tyler’s Dark Tendencies Can Impact The Rest Of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3’s Story
Tyler Might Decide To Finish His Mission For His Sister’s Sake, Regardless Of The Cost
I love the twist that the Sicarius network is calling out to its old master. This means that Voit’s changes - the brain injury, his personality, and his desire to help undo whatever malevolence he started - were all real, but he might not be able to resist his old ways when there are so many devils trying to make him relapse. Showing Voit a death by Sicarius spider is like opening a vintage wine in front of an alcoholic - irresistible.
Voit becoming his old self will make Tyler become his new selfand embrace his inner darkness. It’s a darkness that Voit put in him, but one that Tyler doesn’t deny. Tyler already lied to the BAU once to pursue Voit in season 1.
New episodes ofCriminal Minds: Evolutionstream on Paramount+ Thursdays. The show has already been renewed for season 4.
While I don’t believeTyler will beCriminal Minds: Evolution’s next unsubjust yet, I do think it is likely that, if the old Voit emerges, Tyler will seek revenge for his sister and everyone Voit has hurt. This is especially true ifPenelope is Voit’s next target inCriminal Minds: Evolution. However, even for the best, most heartbreaking reasons, BAU agents can’t become vigilantes. That’s why I’m worried about whatCriminal Minds: Evolutionhas in store for Tyler Green.
