Prime Video’s new crime drama series,Countdown, is in the middle of airing its debut season, and now, creator Derek Haas has some positive thoughts about a potential season 2. Led by Jensen Ackles, the action series centers on Detective Mark Meachum, who is called upon to investigate the murder of a DHS officer. After the first three episodes of the show’s first season dropped on Prime Video on June 25,Countdowndeveloped a strong followingdespite subpar reviews from critics, becoming the second-most-streamed show or film across the platform when it first premiered.
With just over half of the debut season underway, Haas was asked byTV Insiderabout his thoughts about the potential ofCountdowngetting a season 2 renewal from Prime Video. Telling the outlet he’s “feeling good” about its chances, he also notes that the streamer will be focused more on the viewership analytics than the actual reception to the show, which he finds more encouraging given how it’s continuing to perform well. See what Haas said below:
I’m feeling good. I haven’t done streaming before, so kind of all of the analytics are new. It’s different from when I was doing network and you knew the next morning, like, oh, this is doing great, whatever. But I’m excited because it feels like we continue to pick up viewers every week and so that gets me all excited.
In looking at the show’s broad future beyond a potential season 2, Haas reflected on his time withChicago Fire, in which he didn’t imagine the procedural drama would run as long as it did,but assured that as long as fans continue to be interested in the show, he’ll continue makingCountdown.See the rest of what Haas said below:
I said this before with Chicago Fire way back when. I was like, as long as people keep showing up, we’ll keep making it. Now did I think that would go for 14 years? I had no idea. So I will say the same thing about this: As long as people keep watching and digging it, then we will keep making it.
The Show’s Continued Viewership Success Is Encouraging
Since Haas believes the future of this show is dependent on the viewers, there is a good possibilityCountdownwill receive a season 2 renewal. As he mentioned, the show continues to hold a place in Prime Video’s Top 10 shows chart, sitting alongside thecritically acclaimedBoschspinoffBallard, which is also awaiting a potential season 2 renewal, and the recently returnedSummer I Turned Pretty, whose season 3 is closing out the teen romantic drama.
In addition to its viewership numbers,Countdown’s Rotten Tomatoes scores also showcases that audiences are clearly enjoying the show more than critics are. The action series holds an impressive audience score of 73%, which is much higher than its 33% critic score. Based on this high audience approval rate on a prominent site, it feels likelyCountdowndoes have enough of a fanbase to warrant it receiving a season 2 greenlight.
Our Take On Haas Thoughts On A Potential Countdown Season 2
The Show Has Legs For Multiple Seasons
The fact that Haas wants to make more seasons ofCountdownif people continue to tune in is a smart move, because if a show has a strong enough fanbase, there’s no reason to cut things short. Having multiple seasons of an already well-liked show with tons of mysteries that could span years' worth of television makes plenty of sense, as evidenced by everything fromsimilar action shows asReacherand24to other genre efforts like the horror-focusedFromand survival classicLost.
With there being still six episodes left to go in season 1, there’s still enough time left for Prime Video to consider their options and see whether the strong viewership maintains or drops off. However, with no other current major action titles currently on the air on the streaming,Countdown’s chances of a season 2 renewal are certainly looking encouraging and could find itself becoming the next24for genre fans.
