As many longtime Internet denizens are likely aware, James Rolfe’s character, theAngry Video Game Nerd(originally the Angry Nintendo Nerd) has been skewering video games and the culture surrounding the medium for quite some time. In fact, the ongoing series named after the fictional figure has lasted for nearly 14 years running. Just recently, though,AVGNdecided to celebrate the 2018 holiday season in a major way by playing some oldHome Alonegames with none other than the film franchise’s star, Macaulay Culkin.
As seen below in theAngry Video Game Nerd’s latest installment, the Nerd offers up a Christmas episode fit for gaming curmudgeons like himself, with Culkin stopping by to deliver a pizza box full ofHome Alonetitles of yesteryear. With the games ranging from classic platforms such as the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis,Game Boy, PlayStation 2, and even the Game Gear, there’s plenty of schadenfreude on display, as the AVGN and Culkin suffer through the content of the old licensed games for our enjoyment.
At about halfway through the episode, Culkin eventually drops his character as “The Pizza Boy” to fully lambaste theHome Alonegames and point out the absurd contrivances that developers came up with to pad the actual plot of the movies and make certain scenes playable. For instance, one stage inHome Alone 2: Lost in New Yorkfor SNES shows how disconnected the game is from the film’s story, as it contains a chef as a boss character that strips away his clothes during the battle for no apparent reason. Thankfully, Nintendo didn’t include it in theSNES Classic’s game lineup.
All things considered, the gags and the writing, along with Rolfe and Culkin’s fun rapport with one another on-screen, makes for a greatAngry Video Game Nerdentry that fans can enjoy both during and outside of the holiday season. Not to mention, it’s nice to see theHome Alonestar show the retro classicToeJam & Earlsome love by wearing a t-shirt with the title’s logo printed across the front. So, with any luck, Rolfe and the rest of the team behind Cinemassacre Productions will keep putting out more solid content like this latest video for many more years to come.
