There’s aFinal Fantasygame that would be a perfect candidate for a remake after 31 years, and it’s not the highly anticipatedFF9 Remake.Recently, there have been a lot of rumors and speculation about a possible remake of the ninth main entry in the series, released in 2000. With its 25th anniversary, there was some expectation that the long-rumored remake would be announced, butFinal Fantasy 9’s anniversary celebrationsdidn’t include the remake, and instead focused on discounts, products, and even new artwork.
At the moment, Square Enix is publicly focusing on the third part of theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeseries, following the release ofFF7 Rebirthin 2024. It’s unclear when Part 3 will be released or even what it will be called, but the company has announced that it is working on it.Given the success of theFF7 Remakeseries, there is some expectation that Square Enix will revisit some of its older storiesto go beyond remasters, like theFinal Fantasy Tacticsremaster, and start working on more remakes for classic titles.
Final Fantasy 6 Is A Classic For A Reason
FF6 Is The “Most Complete” Entry In The Series
Considered the“most complete”Final Fantasygame by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the series’ creator,FF6is considered a classic for a reason. The last main entry in the series with a 2D pixel art graphic style, the game follows the story of Terra and her allies as they dispute the fate of the world and its inhabitants with the villainous Kefka. Sakaguchi’s evaluation of the game is on point:the game is complete, with an extraordinary gameplay structure, great artistic design, memorable soundtrack, unforgettable characters, and a story that endures the ages, even 31 years after its release.
While the game is not as popular as the 3D titles that came after it,it is largely considered one of the best in the series, going beyond just the pixel-styled entries. In fact, among the original pixel titles,FF6is the only one among thebestFinal Fantasygames of all time, with an impressive 92 Metascore onMetacritic.
Final Fantasy 6 Would Be A Killer Remake
The Game Would Reach New Audiences
The story and characters ofFF6are superb, and seeing them in a modern style would be great. Some would argue that there are problems withFinal Fantasy 6’s length for a remake, and while that is true, it could easily be split into parts, much like the titles in theFF7 Remakeseries.A remake of this game, which may not have reached certain audiences thanks to its age, style, or traditional turn-based combat, could break through barriersand reach new players.
FF6director, Yoshinori Kitase, has mentioned in an interview that there is “too much” content to adapt for a remake, as shared in a post by raggabomb onReddit.
As one of my favorite entries in the series, I find the idea of a remake forFF6particularly attractive, as I’d be curious to see a full 3D model of some of the best characters in the series, as well as complete voice acting. Furthermore, as great as the original game is, I’d love to see how the game could be adapted into a structure similar to that ofFF7 Remake, for example. WhileFF7is indisputably the series’ most popular entry, it’d be great if Square Enix looked toward this otherFinal Fantasygame.
