Disney’sWreck-It Ralph, on track for a November release, has already caught my eye thanks to its premise. A lot of films have poorly dealt with videogames as the main subject matter, but if any studio can pull it off, it is Disney Animation. Sure, it’s not a Pixar production, but so far, it seems to be receiving the “Pixar” treatment.
To lend credibility to its “game universe,” the movie would need to have at least a couple of cameos from actual videogame characters. It certainly helped viewers to connect withToy Storyby having army men, Speak & Spell, Barbie dolls, and more on the big screen. In the latest issue of Disney’sD23 magazine, a quick off-screen glimpse of a scene reveals that Dr. Wily, Bowser, Zangief, and Dr. Eggman will make appearances. Looks like some kind of bad guy support group — technically, Zangief has been portrayed as a villain in several incarnations — which would tie in to the protagonist Ralph’s dream of breaking out of his role as a game villain.
This single blurry photograph speaks volumes of the attention to detail this film is receiving. If Disney can effectively leverage these licensed characters while demonstrating a genuine understanding of videogame lore,Wreck-It Ralphmay very well become one of the best videogame-inspired movies around.
